As research for their report, Software Advice had asked current BPM software users several questions, the two that I am going to focus on here are:

The widespread requirements for BPM software are interesting and certainly reflect the wide variety of software capability requirements that Triaster customers have and the wide variety of problems that organisations use BPM software to solve.
A recent snap poll of some of our customers, asking them to state the problems that they have used Triaster to solve, resulted in an extremely diverse set of answers - from training new staff in an area with a rapid turnover (call centre), to a platform for documenting current business processes and baselining improvement initiatives.

The software capabilities required to deliver on these are therefore unsurprisingly diverse and wide ranging too.
Even just looking at the top three critical BPM software capabilities stated in the Software Advice report, the requirements for content management software and the requirements for analytics and process analysis software are at entirely different ends of the complexity scale and, I believe, herein lies the major pain points of BPM users.
Software Advice state that the majority of BPM software users report they are “very” to “extremely” satisfied with their current software. However, those with moderate to low levels of satisfaction report the following challenges:
These issues generally arise when the BPM system user requires an intuitive content management system, which they and the rest of the organisation can easily find, search and use – even out of the office on their mobile phone or ipad - while the BPM software system in fact delivers lots of complex functionality to enable process analysis.

Eileen O'Loughlin, market researcher for Software Advice states:
“While a majority of current BPM software users report high levels of satisfaction, those with moderate to low levels of satisfaction reported struggles specifically centered around integration and data import/export issues. To combat these issues, prospective buyers should talk about integration and data migration needs with vendors. This is a critical step all businesses should implement to help combat any struggles that might come up after implementation."
The key message that I would like you to take from this article is: be really clear what your core business objective is and ensure that the BPM software that you purchase, delivers first and foremost on that requirement.
Too often at Triaster, we see the main business users’ requirements for excellent content management being confused by the complex analysis requirements of a potential secondary user.
