Before you buy anything, it's a good rule of thumb to look at which business process improvement techniques work best. To find this, you'll need to do three things:
- Do your research (How well regarded is the company?)
- Try before you buy (demos are a good way of seeing whether a product or service is the right fit for you)
- Read the reviews (there are so many review sites, blogs and customer ratings out there)
We have written many articles on why it's good to do your research before implementing a Business Management System because it's hard to untangle a management system once it's got its tentacles all wrapped up in your systems.
However, once you have done the research, asked the right questions and established what's really underneath the bonnet, you need to get started.
Too often, the improvement project manager over-plans and stalls their way out of a BPM system, attempting to learn everything about Business Process management Systems before implementation.
However, in order for business process improvement software to be effective, you actually need to implement it and after you've done the relevant research and ensured that it is the best fit, the next step is to implement and learn as you go...that's what continual improvement is all about - implementing, learning and changing systems accordingly.
This video supplies six steps to getting started. These are:
-
Don’t spend too long learning the theory of BPM
-
Trial potential BPM software systems as soon as possible
-
Choose your start point wisely
-
Eat the elephant one bite at a time
-
The BPM system might be new, but your processes aren’t
